Reiki is a relaxing meditative therapy that is based on the idea that there is an unseen ‘life force energy’ that flows through us. It engages an ancient ‘laying on of hands’ to help to create flow in this energy. Reiki can help balance and nourish this energy to promote our body’s innate healing and help us achieve health, wellbeing, and inner-peace of mind.
When we experience emotional, mental, and physical distress, we frequently experience blocks in our energy. Although this is typically beyond our conscious awareness, sometimes we can feel it as an achiness in our heart, a twisting in our gut, or other physical sensations. Reiki can help to release these blocks and promote healing by activating the relaxation response and helping the body to balance itself from a very deep level. This is done by placing the placing the hands in a series of positions over or slightly above the body that align with the body’s energy centres.
Reiki can be an excellent holistic complement to psychotherapy, or it can be a standalone treatment for someone experiencing physical, emotional, or mental distress.
